Philosophy

In western culture, the word is derived from the Greek words philo- "loving" and sophia "knowledge, wisdom." Originally, the pursuit of philosophy in the West was hand in hand with religion, and thus was an engagement of the entire psyche (heart and mind) seeking to experience divine principles. The introduction of the terms "philosopher" and "philosophy" has been ascribed to Pythagoras.

In Sanskrit, the word for philosophy is darshana, derived from dris, "to see," which imparts the same point of view of all original philosophies: the longing to experience the true nature of consciousness or Being.
